Unity:

After a year of being disgusted with Unity's controversial new fee, I considered giving it a try after they made some changes. While playing around with tutorials I found out that the Brackeys jam has been postponed and I still had time to enter. So color me surprise when I discovered half way through the jam that the runtime fee has been scrapped completely.

The Plan:

So taking this into consideration I started to plan my game around the theme (Calm before the storm) and my rough idea. I wanted to recreate the core game loop from the original Slenderman games, where you had to collect sheets of paper before Slenderman gets you.

What Went Wrong:

I started by modelling everything from scratch, but soon learned that I was wasting valuable time. It took forever to export models from Blender to Unity with textures intact due to bad tutorials on the subject (Spoiler Alert! there can only be one texture).

That is why unity asset store is so handy and it definitely got me out of a tight place during this jam.

I had trouble with the Asset store trees so I had to place each individual tree by hand.  I think this game took a toll on my GPU. What the hell are LOD'S?

Upon exporting  I realized that the canvas item showing the page counter was not showing at all-8 min before the deadline. I ended up submitting the game as is.

I want to do more updates, but completely destroyed my current GPU working on this project.

What Went Right:

The player movement was working. The enemy was following the player and the flashlight turned on and off. That's about it.

What I learned:

I really learned a lot by building this game.

I learned to build my game loop first before modelling items I probably didn't need to begin with.

Focus on single image textures when working in 3D.

I suck at sound design and coding , so those are my new goals to approve upon.

I learned by taking the leap to make this game, I inspired some of my friends to do the same.

Also there are many bad tutorials out there.
